caravanserai at The Independent School of Art

The Independent School of Art is a collective initiative that has established monthly art meetings in Penryn, Cornwall. Since Jan 2010 various local artists have presented their work & last night we did a caravanserai session.

We set the space out in caravanserai cafe style & invited people to bring & share food & drink – a great turn out & plenty for all

Following Kimberley’s intro Annie whizzed thru a presentation of the project extracted from her doctoral thesis (the full text with images/links is available for download here: ISA 3.11.11.pdf). Mac followed this up with hosting a ‘fireside session’ (without a fire and out of context!) – featuring people who had been at Treloan. Performing against a backdrop of fireside images was Seamas Carey on accordian and poets Nick Jarvis and Danielle Allen. Kimberly took the open mike stage, filling the hall with song…beautiful. Feast 2011

Feast was brilliant this year, putting the marquee up made all the difference – knowing we were under cover meant that we could happily prepare all manner of culinary delights – the food turn out was amazing – big thanks to all. For the last three days Robin Harford has led groups on a morning forage – this one takes place on Peters Splosh, one of the beaches below the campsite..

Carragheen, Chondus crispus

Carrageen, from the Irish carraigin or ʻLittle Rockʼ, was traditionally used as a milk
thickener for a popular bedtime drink, and was claimed to be good for insomnia. It
was also used to make blancmange and firm up fish pates.

It is rich in trace elements and vitamins along with protein, fat and
carbohydrate, it is almost a complete food.

Sea Lettuce, Ulva lactuca

Sea lettuce is full of iron, vitamin A, B and C, protein, plus trace
elements.

Print shop poetry – aug 4th

Following a stint at Camp Bestival, Belle Benfield brought her wonderful handmade stamps to Treloan – and with Mac’s poetry input they ran a print session for campers at the project van. More pics here and here

it rained all the way through but we all stayed mesmerised by the evenings entertainment..amazing! someone said ‘how typically British’

The beautiful winsocks displayed for fireside were made during the day in a family workshop (in the sun!) led by visiting arts educator Michele Kitto and assisted by Mac. We look forward to working with Michele in the future.

The Living Room – drawing session

The Living Room – bookbinding sessions

The Living Room was a great success with people dropping in and out to peruse Chris’s handmade sketchbooks and have a chat, tea and yummy cakes made by Liv. Emma, Liv and Chris worked non stop teaching us all how to make books and opening the space up for an added informal drawing session on the saturday (more on that in the next post). Mary Alice as always, took some great shots that you can see here and theres some more on the caravanserai flickr album
